stephen laubner never fails to deliver the goods, whether on his own label something or elsewhere. having recently popped up on the untold stories, this time around hes dropping his uniquely crusty compositions on synthetic gold. after a quietly disconcerting ambient opening, the leftfield grind of the taphead pushes an uncompromising agenda of ragged bass and an unrelenting groove. october sunrise by way of contrast is a more intimate, sweet natured affair. syntax error too taps into the softer side of laubner s craft in a most mesmerizing of ways, but for the die hard fans fear not, there s also plenty of locked groove loops included to keep you tripping into infinity.

antwood (a.k.a. canada’s tristan douglas) returns to planet mu with his second album “sponsored content”. the album is more reflective than his debut, last year’s “virtuous.scr”. the relentless mood of the first album has given way to a more melodic, stripped out sound. it still shakes with speed and energy, but with more space, more moments of delicate sadness and strange cyborg pop. what comes to the fore in “sponsored content” is tristan’s gift for melody, coupled with the uncanny feeling that somehow his strange music is an entire ecosystem of it’s own.

house for her is a label founding its birth in the need that she s gone had to express his feelings in his mixes and productions. the time came to him, 1 year ago to give the floor to other people, to let everyone build pieces of music around their lived experience. in this release, the four artists came to cover in mist the wax in a cascade of tablecloths sometimes soft and other times more aggressive, to develop a ep rich in questioning, ranging from dance pieces to other more ambient things, linking them together to tell a story. raär and mp-57, as usual, darkened in the pile, revealing brutal tracks but nevertheless completely full of feelings. devant, with a more colorful touch, has come to appease the ep of a piece of a house deep and sexy, endowed with an atmosphere reminding us much nostalgia. and finally entrave, in a final piece, quietly envelops us to finish to walk in this ep, as in a novel, a kind of sombre happy-end.

being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. if you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outsà) and press it up. this is one of these occasions. when kalk (the collaborative project of philippe heinen and joffrey becker) was released on julien briffaz label brif in 1999, i just had started to dj out at a club in darmstadt (the late cafÚ kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what i liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the bpm hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. it seemed that there werent too many around with the same desire. otherwise akasha wouldnt have remained a diamond in disguise and not what morgan geist so aptly named an unclassic. by his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. if you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of kalk. mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. mind you, its old house music from days of yore. dj gj

does the world need more acid? yes it does! the r-a-g trio aka dutch producers ma spaventi, g-string & aroy dee deliver three raw acid-jams with aroy on the couch working the mic. the lyrics of dreadfully nervous are based on a edgar allan poe story. . dreadfully nervous (aryd s acid mix) is a gurgling brew of squelchy acid with dark vocals and pinging cowbells pulling you in all directions. coarse claps and ever more wild synths encourage you to cut loose and make for another timeless cut. dreadfully stoned is more stripped back, with a rubbery arpeggiated synth the main hook over subtle, supple drums. those dark spoken word vocals are back again and the whole thing is freaky and unsettling as a result. last of all is the bright and glistening no soul with metal hits and claps and prickly acid all bursting out of dusty chicago drums. it s raw and sure to fire the synapses just like r-a-g productions always do.

emotional rescue and malka tuti recognise their shared passion for globe-trotting sounds and team up to present this album from c cat trance, a project from john rees lewis who was formerly of post punkers medium medium. it s no surprise to learn that this was a project of the 1980s, as all the hallmarks are there. with the same outernational attitude that made the work of eno, hassell, czukay, wobble and scores more so alluring, this collection shines a light on a true gem of the era and provides a fresh pressing of some stone cold leftfield party groovers like shake the mind.

the second ep of samuel rohrer’s range of regularity album presents two more striking reinterprations. these new remixes provide an intriguing parallax view of the original tracks, using the percussive eclecticism of the parent lp as a starting point from which to journey into sonically vibrant, feature-rich territories. the production specialists on hand for this project include burnt friedman and ricardo villalobos. villalobos, has already formed a strong working relationship with rohrer’s ambiq trio, lends his talents to both of the eps. (ror remixes i - amel-ep716). nonplace label boss friedman, as well, has carved out a unique space for himself within the electronic world, logging several decades’ worth of releases that with dub-wise production sensibility, skewed humor, and riots of tone color. though each individual remix has its own character, they are all united in their ability to provide a quick cure for fatigue with the common “loop”: though not improvised, they are strung together from fleeting phrases that evolve as if they are taking on a life independent of their creators. burnt friedman’s own dramatic interpretation of “microcosmoism” pairs up his consciousness of deep bass and analog inventiveness with rohrer’s continually transforming sound objects, making for a flowing and wordless narrative that simply dares listeners to stop paying attention. feeling more like a collaboration in “real time” than a remix proper, friedman brings his characteristic ‘mad scientist’ wit to the proceedings and delivers an energetic piece that simply glows in the dark. this is complemented nicely by villalobos’ remix of “microcosmoism”. it carries the energy level of the 1st ep over to a new disk, while heavily experimenting with feelings of emotional ambiguity. at some points aggressive and at other points merely curious, this mischievous collage of attitudes feels as inspired by the questing jazz of sun ra as it is by continental techno. contemplative keyboard runs, enthusiastic spring-like percussion and malfunctioning machine chatter all coalesce to make this a most fascinating piece of multi-purpose electronic music.

arthur russell epitomised the spirit that defined downtown nyc in the 70s and 80s. yet his inability to complete projects resulted in limited output. be with now present the reissue of event horizon, an album arthur did finish with his cult group the necessaries. criminally neglected for 35 years, its scarcity on vinyl has caused it to evade his most diehard fans and its relative obscurity has rendered it largely unknown, even amongst arthur acolytes.

juxta position returns once more to his own imprint with two slices of epic techno. kinaesthesia is a subtle tool track with added depth, as waves of synth chords wash over deep percussion in increasing intensity. barrier block however hits straight between the eyes, with its fusion of varying styles. a half breakbeat rhythm section builds in intensity before an early 90’s frankfurt influenced melodic synth construction reveals itself, culminating in a spectacular crescendo. two more essential cuts for your box, do not miss!

assemble music brings together four more producers at the forefront of today’s fine minimal/house/electro scene. eklo boss seuil kicks things off with jam, a slowly-unfolding confection of metallic percussion and rolling bass set against a meditative, minor backdrop. his fellow half baked resident robin ordell brings a tipsy-sounding vibe to mobsiw, each element swaying its way around the others in an off-key dance. les points’ barbir adds detroit hats to a no-shits-given breakbeat and suspends it in time, before finally a 4/4 kick comes to put feet back on the ground. finally, traffic founders martyné and jacob draw on more contemporary breaks and electro influences on electronetto, with that laissez-faire swing with which their label has become synonymous.

black ivory was the pride of harlem and new yorks answer to the philly-fine delfonics but with infinitely more teen sex appeal. this silky-smooth 70s harmony trio featured the fabulous falsetto lead of leroy burgess (nephew of philly soul legend, thom bell) and charted four top-40 r&b singles and two top-30 lps under the guiding hand of their manager and today records driving force, patrick adams. songs like, you and i, time is love and dont turn around (which they performed live on soul train) are acknowledged sweet soul classics. and as the decade progressed and tastes changed, they successfully conquered the disco dancefloors with fave-raves like, mainline and walking downtown (saturday night) for buddah records which were liberally sampled by the hip-hop generation a true testament to the staying power of their incessantly soulful sound.

after numerous releases on staple labels like moods & grooves, deep explorer, contrast wax, minuendo & soul print, the duo from malta are back to their homegrown label batti batti. the 3 tracks on this ep are somewhat different to their usual style, putting aside their laid-back deepness and focusing more on the dance floor by delivering an ep of raw drums, acid lines, warm chords and filtered pads. a truly interesting release to say the least.

having previously impressed for burek and five fold separately, berlin based italian duo autre and two thou teamed up for a split record on croatian fields & forests imprint. the record showcases a nice combination of eclectic rhythms, funky basses and spacey solos but despite its club signature and retro-futuristic vibe, solar society is still more of a cosmic porch burner rather than a dancefloor banger.
